LA SCALA OPENING NIGHT AT THE
SOUTHSIDE WORKS CINEMA
The Southside Works Cinema proudly presents three HD opera programs on the big screen.
(Pittsburgh, PA) – The Southside Works Cinema is the exclusive Western Pennsylvania venue for three special HD opera presentations including the spectacular opening night performance of DON CARLO from Italy’s famed Teatro alla Scala, SALUTE PETRA: CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF LUCIANO PAVAROTTI a concert event from Petra, Jordan held in honor of one of opera’s greatest stars and RIGOLETTO from the 2008 Verdi Festival at Teatro Regio di Parma.
Every year on December 7th (a holiday in the city of Milan, in honor of the patron saint of the city Sant’Ambrogio), La Scala officially inaugurates its Opera Season. La Scala’s opening night is one of European society’s most important cultural events. Heads of state, princes & kings, as well as Italy’s elite are certain to be in attendance. The 2008/2009 season opened with a stunning performance of Verdi’s DON CARLO which was filmed in glorious high definition and digital sound. The Southside Works Cinema will be offering Pittsburgh audiences two opportunities to experience the magic of La Scala’s opening night when it presents DON CARLO on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 7:00 PM and on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 1:00 PM.
DON CARLO features Fiorenza Cedolins, Italy’s most requested soprano who won the Luciano Pavarotti Vocal Competition in 1996 and has since performed with world-renowned conductors and singers, portraying Elisabeth de Valois. Stuart Neill, one of the most important tenors in the classical world today, sings the title role.
The Southside Works Cinema will also be exhibiting two other exciting international opera events.
A year after Luciano Pavarotti passed away, a charity concert and memorial ceremony was held in honor of the legendary tenor at the renowned historical site of Petra, Jordan on October 12, 2008. Top artists from the worlds of classical and popular music including Sting, Andrea Bocelli and Placido Damingo performed in remembrance of Pavarotti’s great talent. SALUTE PETRA: CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF LUCIANO PAVAROTTI will have one showing only at the Southside Works Cinema on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 7:00 PM.
RIGOLETTO, filmed at the 2008 Verdi Festival, will be shown on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 1:00 PM. Maestro Leo Nucci, sings the title role, a role he has played over 400 times and one that allows him to fully showcase his extraordinary talent.
“With our on-going opera programs, the Southside Works Cinema is becoming a true destination for music and opera lovers as we showcase some of the world’s most important works by great artists,” says Jon Forman, President of Pittsburgh Cinemas.
Individual general admission tickets to each performance will be $20 and are on sale at the Southside Works Cinema box office or online at www.sswcinema.com.
The Southside Works Cinema is located at 425 Cinema Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15203.
